The reason on the decline letter is rarely the reason.

I started Trust Financials because of a pattern I kept seeing. A business with real revenue, real customers and a real reason to borrow would get turned down, and the owner would be told something vague about risk appetite. When you read the file afterwards the reason was almost never the business. It was that nobody had written the request down properly, or the deal had gone to a lender whose mandate never covered it.

So the work here is unglamorous. Build the schedule of every existing facility, run the coverage on trailing numbers and then again on a bad year, search what is already registered, and write a request short enough that an adjudicator can price it without calling anyone. Then decide who should see it, and take it to three lenders rather than twelve.

The early answer is the part I would defend hardest. If the numbers do not hold, you hear it in week one, with the reason and with what would have to change. Nobody enjoys that call. It is still cheaper than six weeks of work and a decline you could have been told about on the first Tuesday.

Where I am useful, and where I am not

  • Working capital and asset based facilities for asset heavy businesses.
  • Equipment finance and sale and leaseback, where the number follows the appraisal.
  • Acquisition and partner buyout structures using bank debt, vendor paper and equity.
  • Refinancing a debt schedule that has grown one facility at a time.

Twenty minutes, and you will know where you stand.

Tell me the amount and the timing. If it does not look fundable I will say so on the call.

No lender hears your name until you say so.

A request emailed to twenty lenders leaves twenty records. The next one to see it reads the declines before they read the deal, and a file that looks shopped is priced as one. So the list is built with you, approved by you in writing, and nothing leaves this office before that.
